+ Knee Prosthesis
The knee prosthesis is a surgical procedure for replacing the articular surfaces of the knee with artificial components. Components altered by wear of the femur, tibia and patella are replaced. The femoral implant is metallic, the tibial is a combination of metal and polyethylene, and the patella is polyethylene.
Total knee replacement is indicated mainly in patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis with limited mobility affecting daily life. Most patients usually have more than 55 years. The radiological study confirms usually advanced joint damage with loss of joint space and bone deformity.
Osteoarthritis is a joint disease that involves the structural alteration and loss of articular cartilage. The most important clinic is pain, inflammation, deformity and joint stiffness. After implantation of a knee prosthesis can be able to perform normal activities of daily life.
The implantation of a prosthesis is an important intervention that requires a comprehensive analytical and radiological study, and should be performed by a specialist in this type of surgery.
Before the intervention will be evaluated by the anesthesiology team, who will review your test and evaluate the medical aspects of each patient. This type of surgery is done under general or epidural regional anesthesia depending on the previous condition and the patient's desire.
The knee replacement operation is a major surgery, so it can produce complications that may require further surgery. These complications include knee pain, separation of components, stiffness and knee infection.
The results obtained from a total knee replacement are very satisfactory in most patients. About 90% of knee prosthesis last longer than 15 years.
